Entrepreneurship opportunities are being sought out in research labs, early stage funding is helping accelerate new companies, students are being mentored, and a vibrant incubator is housing new startup ventures.

Economic Development Through Innovation
To innovate is to translate knowledge and ideas into economic growth and social well being. The University of Illinois is a leader in conducting groundbreaking research that forms the foundation for meaningful innovation. Our discoveries have led to products and services that have a profound impact on human lives.

The University has embraced its role as an engine of innovation by incorporating economic development as a cornerstone in our mission of teaching, research and public service. One of the results has been the creation of a system of resources to work with both the campus community and corporate partners to facilitate the protection and transfer of intellectual property.

Research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
World-class research facilities located on the Urbana campus attract the brightest students and the best faculty members. The newest addition, the cutting-edge Institute for Genomic Biology can house up to 400 researchers in three main fields: Systems Biology, Cellular and Metabolic Engineering, and Genome Technology.

The University’s reputation for excellence has been built, in part, on robust interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research. One of the pioneering centers for such collaborative efforts is the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology where eighteen research groups from sixteen departments work within and across three broadly defined themes: biological intelligence, human-computer intelligent interaction, and molecular and electronic nanostructures.

At Illinois, research shapes the campus identity, stimulates classroom instruction and serves as a springboard for public engagement activities throughout the world. Opportunities abound for graduate students to develop independent projects and launch their own careers as researchers while working alongside faculty and assisting in their research. Illinois continues its long tradition of groundbreaking accomplishments with remarkable new discoveries and achievements that inspire and enrich the lives of people around the world.
